Career: Money for nothing

I recently interviewed for a new position with my employer. The position was posted with no "relocation expenses" provided, and I would have to move to a new city. However, after the interview, they offered me the job. I said, "Well that sounds good, but what about relocation? There wasn't any listed on the posting." They checked with HR and said they would be happy to give me the standard relocation package, worth about $5,000, and the majority of it is paid in cash to me. Because this is an internal transfer, I couldn't negotiate salary, but I consider this $5k moving bonus to be a pretty sweet deal.

My actual relocation expenses won't be anywhere near $5k, so I get to pocket the rest. See what you get for asking? The worst they can say is no.
